A variety of Apple laptop and iPad chargers can be found throughout the district. Staff and students are often unsure which chargers to use with which device. Additionally, personal chargers are frequently mixed in, only further adding to the confusion.
Please reference this guide to determine which chargers are approved for use with LPSD-owned devices. Please email the helpdesk with any questions.
Identify Your Device Connection
First, you must identify what connection your device uses. Most iPad use Lightning cables for charging (there is a handful of the newer iPad Pros in circulation that use USB-C). The older 2015 and 2017 Macbook Airs can use any Magsafe 2 charger. All of the newer Apple laptops use the USB type C (USB-C) connection for charging.
Cable and Power Supply Options
For the older laptops, the cable and power supply cannot be removed from each other. For iPads and laptops that use USB-C chargers, the cable and power supplies can be separated and have some mix-and-match options.
iPad chargers will have a lightning connection at one end, and either a USB type A or USB-C connection at the power supply end. Regardless of the type, a 12-watt power supply is required at minimum to charge LPSD iPads. Higher wattage power supplies will charge iPads at an increasingly faster rate.
Older LPSD iPads shipped with the 12w, USB-A power supplies and USB-A to Lightning cables. Newer LPSD iPads ship with 18-20w USB-C power supplies and USB-C to Lightning cables. The USB-C to Lightning cables can also be used with higher-wattage Macbook Air USB-C chargers or to connect your iPad to your laptop for charging/syncing.
There are primarily 3 cable and 4 power supply models that you will find in circulation.
- White 3ft Apple OEM USB-A to Lightning Cable
- Black 6ft Aukey USB-A to Lightning Cable
- White 3ft Apple OEM USB-C to Lightning Cable
- Black 4ft Aukey USB-C to Lightning Cable
- White 12w Apple OEM USB-A Power Supply
- White 18-20w Apple OEM USB-C Power Supply
- White 12w Anker 2-port USB-A Power Supply
- Black/White Anker 6-port or 10-port USB-A Charging Hub (charging cabinets)
The newer LPSD laptops (2020 Macbook Air) use USB-C chargers. This requires a combination of a USB-C to USB-C cable and a USB-C power supply with at least a 30-watt power rating. The lower wattage iPad USB-C power supplies will not provide enough current to charge the laptops.
There are primarily 2 cable and 3 power supply models that you will find in circulation.
- White 6ft Apple OEM USB-C to USB-C Cable
- Black 10ft Aukey USB-C to USB-C Cable
- White 30w Apple OEM USB-C Power Supply
- White 30w Anker USB-C Power Supply
- Black 30w Aukey USB-C Power Supply*
*The black Aukey 30w USB power supplies turned out to be a poor quality model and if they haven't already, will break easily. However, please continue to use them while they work. It is recommended to use them in the charging carts where they will not be frequently plugged-in/unplugged.
