When talking about MacOS, there are now two different operating system design schemes. There are several major differences between the two different designs that we will go over. It is worth noting that instructions for Monterey will apply to older versions of MacOS.
The easiest way to Identify MacOS is by selecting about this mac from the Apple Menu
in the top left of the screen and selecting "About this Mac" as seen here:

It is also possible to identify the different versions visually. Below are some common visual queues that can tell you what operating system you are using.
Monterey
Monterey can be easily Identified by it's pink background.
Monterey refers to it's options as "System Preferences" as seen here:
Ventura
This is the newest addition to the MacOS family. It has come with several major changes in how it organizes the settings.
Ventura is known for a yellow background that looks like this:
